  1. abstractverb

The central idea of withdrawing makes abstract in common speech a euphemism for appropriate (unlawfully), purloin, steal. In mental processes we discriminate between objects by distinguishing their differences; we separate some one element from all that does not necessarily belong to it, abstract it, and view it alone. We may separate two ideas, and hold both in mind in comparison or contrast; but when we abstract one of them, we drop the other out of thought. The mind is abstracted when it is withdrawn from all other subjects and concentrated upon one, diverted when it is drawn away from what it would or should attend to by some other interest, distracted when the attention is divided among different subjects, so that it can not be given properly to any. The trouble with the distracted person is that he is not abstracted. Compare DISCERN.

appropriate, detach, discriminate, distinguish, distract, divert, eliminate, purloin, remove, separate, steal, take away, withdraw

    Antonyms:
add, combine, complete, conjoin, fill up, increase, restore, strengthen, unite

How to use abstract in a sentence?

  1. Martin Tobias Lithner:

The equation is a portal through which the mind transcends the boundaries of the tangible, glimpsing the abstract landscapes of mathematical reality.

  2. Richard Feynman:

The real question of government versus private enterprise is argued on too philosophical and abstract a basis. Theoretically, planning may be good. But nobody has ever figured out the cause of government stupidity and until they do (and find the cure) all ideal plans will fall into quicksand.

  3. Emma Pomeroy:

What is key here is the intentionality behind the burial. You might bury a body for purely practical reasons, in order to avoid attracting dangerous scavengers and/or to reduce the smell. But when this goes beyond practical elements it is important because that indicates more complex, symbolic and abstract thinking, compassion and care for the dead, and perhaps feelings of mourning and loss.

  4. Marjorie Funderburg:

You can dehumanize people when they are just abstract concepts to you, affirmative action, voting rights — these are issues that you can depersonalize. But you can't depersonalize your cousin's husband at the barbecue who asks you to pass the ketchup. It's hard to dismiss or take a stance against love when it's in your face.

  5. Barack Obama:

This is not an abstract thing anymore. This is not a set of political talking points. This is reality. We can see how it is working. This law is working exactly as it's supposed to, five years in, this is no longer about a law.
