English Synonyms and Antonyms

  1. amongst

Amid or amidst denotes surrounded by; among or amongst denotes mingled with. Between (archaic or poetic, betwixt) is said of two persons or objects, or of two groups of persons or objects. "Let there be no strife, I pray thee, between me and thee, and between my herdmen and thy herdmen," Gen. xiii, 9; the reference being to two bodies of herdmen. Amid denotes mere position; among, some active relation, as of companionship, hostility, etc. Lowell's "Among my Books" regards the books as companions; amid my books would suggest packing, storing, or some other incidental circumstance. We say among friends, or among enemies, amidst the woods, amid the shadows. In the midst of may have merely the local meaning; as, I found myself in the midst of a crowd; or it may express even closer association than among; as, "I found myself in the midst of friends" suggests their pressing up on every side, oneself the central object; so, "where two or three are met together in my name, there am I in the midst of them," Matt. xviii, 20; in which case it would be feebler to say "among them," impossible to say "amid them," not so well to say "amidst them."

How to use amongst in a sentence?

  1. Alexis de Tocqueville:

[Some people] have a depraved taste for equality, which impels the weak to lower the powerful to their own level, and reduces men to prefer equality in slavery to inequality with freedom. I believe that it is easier to establish an absolute and despotic government amongst a people in which the conditions of society are equal, than amongst any other; and I think that, if such a government were once established amongst such a people, it would not only oppress men, but would eventually strip each of them of several of the highest qualities of humanity. Despotism, therefore, appears to me peculiarly to be dreaded in democratic times.

  2. Patrice Derrington:

This is how urban folk choose to live: a defined neighborhood that represents their values and aspirations, set in amongst others of a different identity, hudson Yards is creating a neighborhood - a mix of buildings for work, sleep and play. The heart of a new 'village' has been created.

  3. Hazrat Ali Ibn-e-Abi Talib, Nahj-ul-Balagha (Sermons and sayings Compilation):

Live amongst people in such a manner that if you die they weep over you and if you are alive they crave for your company.

  4. Tyler Jacob:

They told me that the reason they took me off the bus was because I didn't show them my passport, which I believe that they saw that I was the only American amongst all these Turkish citizens, and they decided that they thought I was a spy, so they pulled me aside, made up something and then detained me for 10 days.

  5. Craig Spencer:

Last week when I went to work, we talked about the one or two patients amongst the dozens of others that might have been a Covid or coronavirus patient, in my shift yesterday, nearly every single patient that I took care of was coronavirus, and many of them extremely severe. Many were put on breathing tubes. Many decompensated quite quickly.
