English Synonyms and Antonyms

  1. bribe

A gift is in the popular, and also in the legal sense that which is voluntarily bestowed without expectation of return or compensation. Gift is now almost always used in the good sense, bribe always in the evil sense to signify payment for a dishonorable service under the semblance of a gift. In Scriptural language gift is often used for bribe. "The king by judgment establisheth the land; but he that receiveth gifts overthroweth it." Prov. xxix, 4. A benefaction is a charitable gift, generally of large amount, and viewed as of enduring value, as an endowment for a college. A donation is something, perhaps of great, never of trivial value, given usually on some public ground, as to a cause or to a person representing a cause, but not necessarily of value beyond the immediate present; as, a donation to a pastor. A gratuity is usually something of moderate value and is always given as to an inferior, and as of favor, not of right; as, a gratuity to a waiter. Largess is archaic for a bountiful gratuity, usually to be distributed among many, as among the heralds at ancient tournaments. A present is a gift of friendship, or conciliation, and given as to an equal or a superior; no one's pride is hurt by accepting what is viewed as strictly a present. A boon is a gift that has been desired or craved or perhaps asked, or something freely given that meets some great desire. A grant is commonly considerable in amount and given by public authority; as, a grant of public lands for a college.

How to use bribe in a sentence?

  1. Elizabeth Warren:

That is corruption right at the heart of this government, how it could even be legal, that Goldman Sachs could offer a pre-bribe to somebody like Gary Cohn ?

  2. Geoffrey Berman:

By funneling multimillion-dollar bribe payments through the U.S. financial system, the companies and individual defendants corruptly tried to tip the global economy in their favor and line their own pockets.

  3. Annie Clark:

Bribery will not work on Senator Senator Collins, extortion will not work on Senator Collins. And anybody who thinks these tactics would work on Senator Collins obviously doesn't know Senator Collins. This crowdedfunded money to pressure Senator Collins is based on a quid pro quo -- you vote the way we want and we will keep more than a million dollars away from your opponent -- vote against us and we give Senator Collins the money. It is basically a bribe. Senator Collins will make up Senator Collins mind based on the merits of the nomination. Threats or other attempts to bully Senator Collins will not play a factor in Senator Collins decision making whatsoever.

  4. Paul Shechtman:

At the first trial we argued that the $60,000 payment to Mr. Rechnitz was inappropriate, so I'm not surprised by today's plea, i respect Mr. Huberfeld greatly for admitting what he did, and for not admitting what he didn't do. Implicit in this plea is that he did not pay a bribe to Norman Seabrook.

  5. The FBI:

The incarcerated fraudsters — who typically bribe guards to acquire cell phones — would choose an affluent area such as Beverly Hills, California, they would search the Internet to learn the correct area code and telephone dialing prefix. Then, with nothing but time on their hands, they would start dialing numbers in sequence, trolling for victims.
