English Synonyms and Antonyms

  1. description

A definition is exact, an explanation general; a definition is formal, a description pictorial. A definition must include all that belongs to the object defined, and exclude all that does not; a description may include only some general features; an explanation may simply throw light upon some point of special difficulty. An exposition undertakes to state more fully what is compactly given or only implied in the text; as, an exposition of Scripture. Interpretation is ordinarily from one language into another, or from the language of one period into that of another; it may also be a statement giving the doubtful or hidden meaning of that which is recondite or perplexing; as, the interpretation of a dream, a riddle, or of some difficult passage. Definition, explanation, exposition, and interpretation are ordinarily blended in a commentary, which may also include description. A comment is upon a single passage; a commentary may be the same, but is usually understood to be a volume of comments.

How to use description in a sentence?

  1. Steve Feltham:

I have to be honest. I just don’t think that Nessie is a prehistoric monster, what a lot of people have reported seeing would fit in with the description of the catfish with its long curved back.

  2. Deodatta V. Shenai-Khatkhate:

The phrase "Survival of the fittest" was first coined by Herbert Spencer in his "Principles of Biology" (1864) after reading Charles Darwin's theory of "natural selection" discussed in "On the Origin of Species" by Darwin - published in the same year. Five years later, Darwin first used Spencer's new phrase "Survival of the fittest" alongside his phrase "natural selection" in his fifth edition of "On the Origin of Species", published in 1869. It's interesting to note that "fittest" is often misconstrued as either the strongest of the species or the most intelligent species, which is neither an accurate description nor the interpretation desired by Darwin in his theory. In actuality, the fittest species is the one that is the most adaptable to change. In other words, those who can become most well adapted to current environment and the changes therein, can have the chance and opportunity to survive. Darwin's theory of natural selection teaches us that it's absolutely important to welcome the change, and manage the change for survival and for becoming the winner. It's really interesting that being the most adaptable to change often outweighs the strength and intelligence factors, contrary to the common understanding of life and the phrase "Survival of the fittest.

  3. Ehsan Sehgal:

Whenever I read history, and try to understand a character of Vampire that survives in its Gloomy House after sucking the blood of a virgin. Indeed, it defines an illusion. If I compare that with the White House, where ever, it exists; transparently, it demonstrates the same description; however, it falls not under an illusion; it verifies a reality of survival. The solution everyone knows, need only the courage for the peace of entire humanity on the blue planet.

  4. The Rev. Dr. Gregory Groover:

    I was stunned beyond description.

  5. John Levey:

I think writers get things in their head, and if an actor doesn’t fit that they can’t handle it. Attractiveness is subjective. When it’s not romantic, sexual or violent, I try to eliminate physical description and try to get writers out of their heads.
