How to use ultrasound in a sentence?
The energy may be acoustic, pressure waves, you've probably heard of LRAD devices (or long-range acoustic devices) -- devices they've discussed in the press -- so ultrasound is one mode that could be used for this. We also could have radiofrequency. We could have microwave. We could have light -- lasers are an example of it. I'm going through these just as examples, i want to make it eminently clear that we don't know what they were exposed to and certainly can't make any inferences as to whether it was deliberate or inadvertent.
We use femtosecond laser pulses. We scan the skin and we get signals from the skin, particularly fluorescence, as well as another signal called second harmonic generation. So with these two signals we can build up images and get a precise look into the skin with a high resolution. The resolution is a factor of one thousand (times) better than ultrasound. So now you get the information without taking biopsies; normally you slice them, you stain them, and then a pathologist would look through these sections. Now you can get this information in seconds, labor free and with this fantastic resolution.
Technology has developed significantly since the Russians had the last crewmembers spend that amount of time in space, the types of imaging capability, between MRIs and CAT scans, ultrasound and probably all ways that we collect data, it has gotten better since this was done the last time.
Especially in low - and middle-income countries with really high preterm birth rates and huge neonatal mortality rates, one of the biggest problems is, there is no ultrasound, and women are not empowered to keep track of their last menstrual cycle. It's often taboo to keep track of or talk about your period, that is one of the biggest problems we have worldwide, and lots of folks have been working on trying to find another way -- ideally an inexpensive test -- to figure out what the gestational age is for any given pregnancy.
What this machine is doing is through ultrasound, it’s heating up the skin. And the heat is so intense that the fat cells actually melt, and the patient is gonna notice a significant difference usually in about a month.
