  1. bail

The first four words agree in denoting something given or deposited as an assurance of something to be given, paid, or done. An earnest is of the same kind as that to be given, a portion of it delivered in advance, as when part of the purchase-money is paid, according to the common expression, "to bind the bargain." A pledge or security may be wholly different in kind from that to be given or paid, and may greatly exceed it in value. Security may be of real or personal property — anything of sufficient value to make the creditor secure; a pledge is always of personal property or chattels. Every pawnshop contains unredeemed pledges; land, merchandise, bonds, etc., are frequently offered and accepted as security. A person may become security or surety for another's payment of a debt, appearance in court, etc.; in the latter case, he is said to become bail for that person; the person accused gives bail for himself. Gage survives only as a literary word, chiefly in certain phrases; as, "the gage of battle."

    Synonyms:
    earnest, gage, pledge, security, surety

    Preposition:
Security for the payment of a debt; security to the state, for the prisoner, in the sum of a thousand dollars.

How to use BAIL in a sentence?

  1. Max Rose:

There's definitely a causal relationship to this and the stats do not lie, emerging in New York, particularly over the last year, there is a revolving door, a culture of criminality without consequence, some of which I think is undeniably tied to this bail law. And what's shocking about this is that this solution is so obvious. We need to give judges discretion to actually make decisions pending to the individual case, particularly as it pertains to these individuals who keep on committing crimes. It's my belief that we should be listening to law enforcement officials on the ground.

  2. Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott:

Plainly, this monster should not have been in our community, he shouldn't have been allowed into the country. He shouldn't have been out on bail. He shouldn’t have been with a gun and he shouldn’t have become radicalized.

  3. Betsy Brantner-Smith:

We are hoping that he will fight for a reversal of bail reform in New York. We hope that he is going to hold the newly elected Manhattan district attorney accountable for any failures to prosecute violent criminals and gun crime, mayor Adams has been talking a lot about gun crime. And yet when you look at the realities of the gun laws in New York as opposed to how they are prosecuted, there are a lot of failures there that I hope the mayor recognizes and speaks out against.

  4. Rick Savage:

I dont think anything willhappen because she [Mills] is over herhead.Shes not consulting the experts, shes just doing this to break our state even more, we are broke. We were broke before this. She spent our rainy day fund in her first two months in office, so shes trying to get federalmoney to bail her out. She doesnt care at this pointabout thepeople in the state of Maine ...If she did, she would be reachingout to these businesses.

  5. Marie VanNostrand:

The number of people being arrested now who have pending cases -- which is what the mayor is referencing -- has in fact increased. Now, the causes of that aren't necessarily clear, the mayor made some reference to bail reform... We also know that cases are going on longer because of the pandemic court closures and those types of things. So there's certainly potentially competing causal factors.
