  1. knowledge

Knowledge is all that the mind knows, from whatever source derived or obtained, or by whatever process; the aggregate of facts, truths, or principles acquired or retained by the mind, including alike the intuitions native to the mind and all that has been learned respecting phenomena, causes, laws, principles, literature, etc. There is a tendency to regard knowledge as accurate and systematic, and to a certain degree complete. Information is knowledge of fact, real or supposed, derived from persons, books, or observation, and is regarded as casual and haphazard. We say of a studious man that he has a great store of knowledge, or of an intelligent man of the world, that he has a fund of varied information. Lore is used only in poetic or elevated style, for accumulated knowledge, as of a people or age, or in a more limited sense for learning or erudition. We speak of perception of external objects, apprehension of intellectual truth. Simple perception gives a limited knowledge of external objects, merely as such; the cognition of the same objects is a knowledge of them in some relation; cognizance is the formal or official recognition of something as an object of knowledge; we take cognizance of it. Intuition is primary knowledge antecedent to all teaching or reasoning, experience is knowledge that has entered directly into one's own life; as, a child's experience that fire will burn. Learning is much higher than information, being preeminently wide and systematic knowledge, the result of long, assiduous study; erudition is recondite learning secured only by extraordinary industry, opportunity, and ability. Compare ACQUAINTANCE; EDUCATION; SCIENCE; WISDOM.

    Antonyms:
ignorance, illiteracy, inexperience, misapprehension, misconception, misunderstanding, rudeness, unfamiliarity

How to use knowledge in a sentence?

  1. Bruce McArthur:

The new reports fromThe Globe and Mailand theToronto Star offer conflicting information on the exact date of the interview, with one saying it happened in 2013 and the latter say it was between 2014 and 2017. But both reports raise questions about what Toronto Police knew about Bruce McArthur in the years leading up to Bruce McArthur arrest. Clockwise from left : Majeed Kayhan, 58 ; Dean Lisowick ; Soroush Marmudi, 50 ; Selim Esen, 44 and Andrew Kinsman, 49. ( Toronto Police) The Globe and Mail, citing a source with knowledge of the interview, says it occurred during the Project Project Houston investigation, which looked into the disappearances of three men in Toronto's Gay Village neighborhood, two of which Bruce McArthur was later charged with killing. The source said detectives had linked Bruce McArthur to two of the men through dating apps and brought Bruce McArthur in for questioning after receiving an anonymous tip. The Toronto Star, citing similar sources, said the interview happened between the closure of Project Houston in 2014 and the beginning of another investigation in 2017 that resulted in McArthur’s arrest. It also said the interview was over a matter unrelated to the missing people, but did not disclose what exactly. Detective Sgt. Hank Idsinga told The Globe and Mail in January that Bruce McArthur was not Bruce McArthur during Project Houston. Until we can establish that there has been foul play, we can attach a criminal offence to foul play, that's when someone would become Bruce McArthur.

  4. Emma Straub:

Loss befalls us all ; loss is half the human story, mostly, we experience moments of joy and transcendence a couple of seconds after they have already begun to fade, and our knowledge of such exalted states consists largely of their existence being held in memory. Adult human beings live with the certainty of grief, which deepens us and opens us to other people, who have been there, too.
