How to use protests in a sentence?
I would argue the protests that are occurring in Atlanta, in San Francisco, in New York, in Chicago and Cleveland are actually more powerful than the ones in Ferguson.
The White House guidelines come amid a tempestuous week in which protestors across the country descended on state capitals to express their anger over the effects the lockdown measures were having on the economy despite thousands of new cases of COVID-19 being reported every day. Gretchen Whitmers social-distancing restrictions that critics saidy have gone too far. Similar protests unfolded in Virginia, Wyoming, Kentucky and Ohio over the last week with more planned in Maryland, Missouri, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, New York and New Hampshire. The federal government said Thursday that 5.2 million more Americans applied for unemployment benefits last week, bringing the four-week total to about 22 million out of a work force of 159 million easily the worst stretch of U.S. job losses on record. When it comes to protests that I've been part of here in Toronto, or ones that I saw in the media in Ottawa or Vancouver or Montreal, there were mostly two races -- Black and White. I see very few Brown people engaging in these conversations, or protesting, or donating, or speaking out. I don't think many even recognize their privilege. I know we have some Asian people who are our allies, but from my end it's not enough.
People should be protected in holding demonstrations, especially around issues of great public interest, but with Vietnam's poor record of handling protests, there's every reason to believe that police are punishing dissent, not simply keeping public order.
Merkel underestimated the protests. The least she can do now is come visit (the district of) Sternschanze and see the damage for herself.
