  1. oath

In the highest sense, as in a court of justice, "an oath is a reverent appeal to God in corroboration of what one says," Abbott Law Dict.; an affidavit is a sworn statement made in writing in the presence of a competent officer; an adjuration is a solemn appeal to a person in the name of God to speak the truth. An oath is made to man in the name of God; a vow, to God without the intervention, often without the knowledge, of man. In the lower sense, an oath may be mere blasphemy or profane swearing. Anathema, curse, execration, and imprecation are modes of invoking vengeance or retribution from a superhuman power upon the person against whom they are uttered. Anathema is a solemn ecclesiastical condemnation of a person or of a proposition. Curse may be just and authoritative; as, the curse of God; or, it may be wanton and powerless: "so the curse causeless shall not come," Prov. xxvi, 2. Execration expresses most of personal bitterness and hatred; imprecation refers especially to the coming of the desired evil upon the person against whom it is uttered. Malediction is a general wish of evil, a less usual but very expressive word. Compare TESTIMONY.

How to use OATH in a sentence?

  1. Bennie Thompson:

It’s important to note that even if a President has formally invoked executive privilege regarding testimony of a witness—which is not the case here—that witness has the obligation to sit down under oath and assert the privilege question by question, but these witnesses didn’t even bother to show up.

  2. Luke Goodrich:

Both federal courts to consider this controversial mandate have struck it down as bad for patients, bad for doctors and bad for religious liberty, it is past time for this administration to stop forcing doctors to go against conscience and sound medical judgment and to start respecting their Hippocratic Oath to ‘do no harm.’.

  3. Noel Francisco:

Campaign statements are made by a private citizen before he takes the oath of office and before, under the Opinions Clause of the Constitution, receives the advice of his Cabinet, and that those are constitutionally significant acts that mark the fundamental transformation from being a private citizen to the embodiment of the executive branch, but I would also say here it doesn't matter, because, here, the statements that they principally rely on don't actually address the meaning of the proclamation itself. This is not a so-called Muslim ban. If it were, it would be the most ineffective Muslim ban that one could possibly imagine since not only does it exclude the vast majority of the Muslim world, it also omits three Muslim-majority countries that were covered by past orders, including Iraq, Chad and Sudan.

  4. Carolyn Maloney:

Schumer, D-N.Y., said. HOUSE OVERSIGHT COMMITTEE TO INVESTIGATE POSTMASTER GENERAL AFTER CLAIMS HE PRESSURED EMPLOYEES TO MAKE CAMPAIGN DONATIONS A spokesperson for the USPS did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Earlier Tuesday, Rep. Carolyn Maloney, D-N.Y., also called for DeJoys suspension as Carolyn Maloney announced a new investigation into DeJoy from the Reform Committee, which Carolyn Maloney chairs. FILE - In this Aug. 24, 2020, file photo, Postmaster General Louis DeJoy testifies during a House Oversight and Reform Committee hearing on the Postal Service on Capitol Hill in Washington. ( Tom Williams/Pool via AP) The Washington Post reportedthis weekend that while DeJoy wasCEO of New Breed Logistics, Tom Williams/Pool via AP or Tom Williams/Pool via AP aides pressured employees towrite checks and attend GOP fundraisers at his mansion, five people who worked for New Breed told the paper.DeJoy, a megadonor for theRepublican Party, would reimburse the employees through bonuses, an arrangement that is unlawful, The Washington Post reported Sunday. If these allegations are true, Postmaster General Louis DeJoy could face criminal exposurenot only for Postmaster General Louis DeJoy actions in North Carolina, but also for lying to Reform Committee under oath, we will be investigating this issue, but I believe the Board of Governors must take emergency action to immediately suspend Postmaster General Louis DeJoy, who they never should have selected in the first place. HOUSE DEMOCRATS SUBPOENA USPSS DEJOY FOR HIS CALENDAR, DOCUMENTS ON MAIL DELAYS Maloney was referencing testimony DeJoy gave Reform Committee on Aug. 24 when hedenied pressuring his employees to donate to President Trump, calling such a claim.
