  1. fable

In modern usage we may say that an allegory is an extended simile, while a metaphor is an abbreviated simile contained often in a phrase, perhaps in a word. The simile carries its comparison on the surface, in the words as, like, or similar expressions; the metaphor is given directly without any note of comparison. The allegory, parable, or fable tells its story as if true, leaving the reader or hearer to discover its fictitious character and learn its lesson. All these are, in strict definition, fictions; but the word fiction is now applied almost exclusively to novels or romances. An allegory is a moral or religious tale, of which the moral lesson is the substance, and all descriptions and incidents but accessories, as in "The Pilgrim's Progress." A fable is generally briefer, representing animals as the speakers and actors, and commonly conveying some lesson of practical wisdom or shrewdness, as "The Fables of Æsop." A parable is exclusively moral or religious, briefer and less adorned than an allegory, with its lesson more immediately discernible, given, as it were, at a stroke. Any comparison, analogy, instance, example, tale, anecdote, or the like which serves to let in light upon a subject may be called an illustration, this word in its widest use including all the rest. Compare FICTION; STORY.

How to use fable in a sentence?

  1. Matthew Growney:

I want people to see that Fable is going to be impactful on a child, there’s so much stuff out there that parents have to assess. With this, they know there is something that will make their children smarter, it’s something that will impact a child’s growth.

  2. Matthew Growney:

We listened to teachers for feedback on how the tablet was most effective, one thing that teachers loved was that the tablet did not replace physical, hands-on learning. For instance, you can use Fable to design a ‘frog catcher.’ Create the drawing on the tablet, answer questions, give them physical materials like a shoe box and construction paper and then answer an assessment afterward on the tablet. It’s all about digital to physical back to digital. That is really where education is headed from a deployment standpoint.

  3. Florence Welch:

The whole record is a' be careful what you wish for' fable, the monster of the performance heard me : You don't want to tour anymore ? Sit still for a year. How do you feel now ?

  4. Thomas Jefferson:

The day will come when the mystical generation of Jesus by the Supreme Being in the womb of a virgin, will be classed with the fable of the generation of Minerva in the brain of Jupiter.

  5. Francis Alys ':

I had to kind of squeeze it. and it's maybe the reason why the end result is a 'fable'. I stayed within the frame of something that is not a historical approach it's a much more poetic approach. If anything maybe too poetic, within the circumstances. But it's what came out over that short time.
