English Synonyms and Antonyms

  1. reserved

Dumb, mute, silent and speechless refer to fact or state; taciturn refers to habit and disposition. The talkative person may be stricken dumb with surprise or terror; the obstinate may remain mute; one may be silent through preoccupation of mind or of set purpose; but the taciturn person is averse to the utterance of thought or feeling and to communication with others, either from natural disposition or for the occasion. One who is silent does not speak at all; one who is taciturn speaks when compelled, but in a grudging way that repels further approach. Reserved suggests more of method and intention than taciturn, applying often to some special time or topic; one who is communicative regarding all else may be reserved about his business. Reserved is thus closely equivalent to uncommunicative, but is a somewhat stronger word, often suggesting pride or haughtiness, as when we say one is reserved toward inferiors. Compare PRIDE.

How to use reserved in a sentence?

  1. RAS CARDO REGGAE:

***(c)(p) REGGAE TRUTH- THE REAL -CULTURE YARD- IN TRENCH TOWN WAS AT THE BACK OF MY TENEMENT YARD. WHAT THE MEDIA AND JAMAICA HAS CALLED-CULTURE YARD-WAS JUST ANOTHER PLACE WHERE BOB MARLEY AND SOME OF US USED TO VISIT. I WILL NOT DISCLOSE ANY FURTHER DETAILS OF THIS LOCATION BECAUSE I KNOW THAT THERE ARE PEOPLE WHO WOULD LOVE TO HAVE THIS DETAILED INFORMATION IN THEIR ARSENAL. IT HAD A CERTAIN NAME. SO FAR, WHAT JAMAICA HAS ADVERTISED AS BOB MARLEY'S PLACE OF CAROUSING WAS NOT THE REAL TRENCH TOWN CULTURE YARD. THE JAMAICAN MEDIA HAS BEEN WRONG IN MANY THINGS REGGAE AND OF TRENCH TOWN, AND THEY REFUSED TO LEARN THE TRUTH FROM THOSE WHO KNOW IT, AND LIVED IT. I AM RAS CARDO FROM TRENCH TOWN. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED GLOBALLY.

  2. Dante Alighieri:

The darkest places in hell are reserved for those who maintain their neutrality in times of moral crisis.

  3. Carrie Severino:

This President has been brazen about his willingness to take action that is normally reserved to Congress, the fact that the Court added the constitutional question means that some justices recognized that this is not a run of the mill act of prosecutorial discretion, but a novel and controversial power grab.

  4. Alfred North Whitehead:

Nature gets credit which should in truth be reserved for ourselves: the rose for its scent, the nightingale for its song; and the sun for its radiance. The poets are entirely mistaken. They should address their lyrics to themselves and should turn them into odes of self congratulation on the excellence of the human mind.

  5. Colin Campbell:

Indeed, the Founders mentioned the pagan authors in so many heartfelt speeches, pamphlets and letters that today's sweeping references to America's 'Christian' roots and 'Judeo-Christian heritage' ought to be amended. Maybe these terms should be reserved to explain the traditional religions and morality of individuals, families, congregations, small communitities. Politically, our notions of virtue and vice have had another genesis.
