  1. reserved

Dumb, mute, silent and speechless refer to fact or state; taciturn refers to habit and disposition. The talkative person may be stricken dumb with surprise or terror; the obstinate may remain mute; one may be silent through preoccupation of mind or of set purpose; but the taciturn person is averse to the utterance of thought or feeling and to communication with others, either from natural disposition or for the occasion. One who is silent does not speak at all; one who is taciturn speaks when compelled, but in a grudging way that repels further approach. Reserved suggests more of method and intention than taciturn, applying often to some special time or topic; one who is communicative regarding all else may be reserved about his business. Reserved is thus closely equivalent to uncommunicative, but is a somewhat stronger word, often suggesting pride or haughtiness, as when we say one is reserved toward inferiors. Compare PRIDE.

How to use reserved in a sentence?

  1. Colin Campbell:

Indeed, the Founders mentioned the pagan authors in so many heartfelt speeches, pamphlets and letters that today's sweeping references to America's 'Christian' roots and 'Judeo-Christian heritage' ought to be amended. Maybe these terms should be reserved to explain the traditional religions and morality of individuals, families, congregations, small communitities. Politically, our notions of virtue and vice have had another genesis.

  2. John McCain:

The President task is to reverse The President disturbing tendency to show America's adversaries the deference and esteem that should be reserved for our closest allies. The President must show that The President can be strong and tough with Vladimir Putin -- not for The President task own sake, but to demonstrate The President willingness to defend America, its allies, our shared interests, and our common values against those who threaten them, putin is not America's friend, nor merely a competitor. Putin is America's enemy -- not because we wish it so, but because he has chosen to be.

  3. Justice Minister Ronald Warsal:

We do not have a fixed number yet as to the number of seats, but the amendment will be to the constitution to say parliament will prescribe a system which will include reserved seats for women, it has been over 10 years since we have had a woman in parliament ... It is very hard for women to win seats in Vanuatu, so it is better that we amend the constitution.

  4. Joe Bagley:

The items are significant because we rarely see them, archaeologically, also, Puritan Boston is often seen as an extremely conservative, reserved, and religious location in the 17th century, which it was, but in wealthier houses, the residents had access to luxury goods, purchased them, and enjoyed their more extravagant lifestyle in the privacy of their own home.

  5. Jo Shuter:

He was bullied a little bit, because he was quiet and reserved, generally, he was fine. There (were) no issues with him. There were no problems.
