English Synonyms and Antonyms

  1. clean

To clean is to make clean by removing dirt, impurities, or soil of any kind. Cleanse implies a worse condition to start from, and more to do, than clean. Hercules cleansed the Augean stables. Cleanse is especially applied to purifying processes where liquid is used, as in the flushing of a street, etc. We brush clothing if dusty, sponge it, or sponge it off, if soiled; or sponge off a spot. Furniture, books, etc., are dusted; floors are mopped or scrubbed; metallic utensils are scoured; a room is swept; soiled garments are washed; foul air or water is purified. Cleanse and purify are used extensively in a moral sense; wash in that sense is archaic. Compare AMEND.

    Synonyms:
brush, cleanse, disinfect, dust, lave, mop, purify, rinse, scour, scrub, sponge, sweep, wash, wipe

    Antonyms:
befoul, besmear, besmirch, bespatter, contaminate, corrupt, debase, defile, deprave, pollute, soil, spoil, stain, sully, taint, vitiate

    Preposition:

How to use clean in a sentence?

  1. Peter Jay Hotez:

Washing hands with soap and water after using the toilet or before preparing food and keeping fingernails clean is most important.

  2. Thomas Dekker:

To awaken each morning with a smile brightening my face; to greet the day with reverence for the opportunities it contains; to approach my work with a clean mind; to hold ever before me, even in the doing of little things, the ultimate purpose toward which I am working; to meet men and women with laughter on my lips and love in my heart; to be gentle, kind, and courteous through all the hours; to approach the night with weariness that ever woos sleep and the joy that comes from work well done - this is how I desire to waste wisely my days.

  3. Ryan Murphy:

It is a huge mental drain on me to hear I'm swimming in a race that's probably not clean, that is what it is.

  4. Seemin Qayum:

If we're thinking about keeping girls at school, we need to do a lot of work on the sanitation issue and make sure that there are clean, private, safe and separate facilities for girls at schools. I think this is fundamental.

  5. David Reichmuth:

This study points out that air pollution has real consequences, it's not just number on a spreadsheet, or who gets to enjoy blue skies. There are some individual choices we get to make, about what we buy or how we get around, but a lot of the big decisions are made at levels we don't have control over. So that's where we really need smart policies and regulations that help clean up the air. And if they take into account the current inequities in the system, it will benefit everyone.
